Cycle to Work scheme: how much could you save?

Why ride to work?

Cycling to work is very much on the increase, and is great for anybody who wants to save money, get fitter and do their bit for the environment.

The government are very much behind it too, and you can take advantage of tax relief on your next bike if your employer operates a scheme, and most do*.

How does it work?

Spread the cost of a new bike, interest-free and with zero up-front costs. Payments are taken for your new ride out of your gross salary. The process is simple, government-approved and flexible enough for you to choose repayment options which suit you.

How much could you save?

Well, as of today for example (27th October, 2023), entering a £24k to £30k annual salary into the calculator, an employee buying a bike for £1,700 on a normal tax code would typically save £544. Higher rate tax payers save even more 🙂

Not only that, but unlike most shops we offer the scheme on any of our reduced bikes too: use the same calculator at the reduced price and you’d typically save £569 on our Giant Revolt Advanced 3, which is reduced from £2,399 to £1,777.

That means a class leading £2,399 carbon gravel bike would effectively cost you just £1,208

I don’t want to ride to work everyday…

That’s okay, you don’t have to. There are no prizes or punishments for how often you ride, but it’s expected that the bike you buy will be used at least half of the time for riding to work, although you don’t need to keep a log to prove it’s use.

Do I have to buy a city bike, with mudguards?

Well, that would make sense. But there’s no right or wrong bike to buy, you choose whatever best suits your commute: be it a hybrid with guards to a full suspension ebike.

* My employer doesn’t work with CycleScheme.

That’s okay. We work a lot with CycleScheme but also work with all of the main providers from Halfords to Green Commute Initiative – pretty much everybody to be fair.
